Variable Frequency Drives- Do We Need a VFD?

The VFD takes the incoming power and modifies the electricity to control a motor commonly in an industrial manufacturing plant. The drive can also be used to create a 3rd phase when using a 3 phase motor on a single phase source. Most often the drive is used to change the speed of the motor of a production machine. The drive can also be used to accelerate or decelerate the motor at a defined rate.

The drive can be controlled by using the inputs it comes with or from communications it maintains with another device such as a PLC.

There are many parameters that are available in the drive such as:

  • Defines the specifics of the motor to keep limits so the drive will not damage the motor.
  • Define how the drive is to communicate and respond to the actions requested.

A licensed industrial electrician can provide many solutions with a VFD that can improve:

  • motor longevity
  • machine efficiency
  • machine integration

TechElectric has over 30 years of industrial manufacturing experience with VFDs, making improvements to factory production lines and helping factories run efficiently.
